Meet Dave

CAM08124As many of you members don’t live on reserve, I’d thought I’d start to introduce you to the maintenance and admin staff who works for you in the office and around the area. Each Monday I’m going to do a little post about a different part of our team. Today we will start with Dave Schneider.

On any given day, Dave could do about a hundred different tasks between constructing prints in the frame shop, weed eating, painting, building a fence, taking water samples, putting together furniture, babysitting his grandkids, canning with Deb… you name it!

This morning I came into the office to find Dave meticulously patching a hole in our wall created from moving something last week in preparation for painting the administration building at the end of the month. I figured the painters would patch it then, but Dave “wanted it done right”. When I thanked him for his work, he shrugged his shoulders and said, “Well, it’s just my job!”

He really is a jack of all trades and we are fortunate to have Dave around here! Thanks Dave!

Check out Dave’s formal bio here.

Have a great day!

The start of something new

On July 17th, Skawahlook’s newly formed Housing Committee met for their inaugural meeting. The call went out to members some time ago seeking applicants for this committee. We had a great selection of applications, and through a difficult process, five committee members were chosen. Monty Chapman, Shannon Chapman, Julie Lungal, and Bill Davis were selected as local representatives. With great new technology available, it was also possible for Leah Sjovold to join the team from another country! Leah is a Skawahlook member but is currently living in Ohio with her family due to her husband’s work.

Building on the Skawahlook Lands Committee’s work from the past two years, the Housing Committee will be meeting monthly to work on bringing more housing to Skawahlook. This is a huge undertaking with much research, surveying, and planning. Skawahlook members can expect to be kept up to date with details and also asked for regular input via phone calls and surveys.

The team is led by Chair (and Skawahlook’s Administrator), Sharron Young and Consultant David Carson from Land Forest People Ltd.

Thank you to the members who volunteered their time. What a valuable way to give back to your community!

For more information about the Housing Committee, please contact Sharron Young.

Wow, what an exciting time it is for us working in the administration office right now! First of all, let me back up and introduce myself – My name is Emily. I’m the friendly face you’ll see greeting you at the front desk when you drop in to the office. I was hired at the end of April (2014), and to say I’m fitting in well and loving my job is an understatement! I live in Chilliwack and commute to Ruby Creek and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t drive along the number 7 highway and fall deeper in love with the land. To be tucked between the mighty river and the strong mountain, well, it’s nothing short of breathtaking.

Skawahlook-graphic-colorBefore I began working here, the team had just gone through the process of working with Skawahlook members to brainstorm and design a new logo for both the band as well as the Art Gallery. They did a fantastic job and it’s been a pleasure building on the style and concept of the new logo and translating that into this snazzy new website. In combination with these new logos, the updated website, the super sleek LED sign above the art gallery, and the gorgeous swag we’re ordering in for our members, it’s kind of an administrator’s dream. Everything is feeling new and exciting and we are super excited to share these things with you!

We also have some other things up our sleeve, but you’ll have to check back here to find out more about that later.

We will still be sending out bi-yearly newsletters, but you can check in here weekly for smaller, more frequent updates.

If there is anything specifically you’d like to inquire about or questions you’d like answered, contact alyssa@skawahlook.com (or stop in and say hello!)
