Sasquatch, also called Bigfoot, (from Salish se’sxac: “wild men”) a large, hairy, humanlike creature believed by some people to exist in the northwestern United States and western Canada.

Sasquatch is variably described as a primate ranging from 6 to 15 feet (2 to 4.5 metres) tall, standing erect on two feet, often giving off a foul smell, and either moving silently or emitting a high-pitched cry. Footprints have measured up to 24 inches (60 cm) in length and 8 inches (20 cm) in width.

The Legend of Ruby Creek

One of the most famous Sasquatch sightings is from right here at Sq’ewá:lxw First Nation.  Stories about Sasquatch have been around since the earliest memory, but the modern history of the Sasquatch dates to September 1941 when one of these creatures paid a visit – in broad daylight – to the Chapman family. While stories like this have usually been dismissed or laughed off as unreliable, this experience was accompanied by too much physical evidence to be ignored. It was about 3:00pm in the afternoon of a sunny cloudless day when Jeannie Chapman’s eldest son, then aged 9, came running into the house saying there was a cow coming out of the woods. Mrs. Chapman went out to look since her son seemed oddly disturbed. They saw what at first she thought was a very big bear among the bushes bordering the railway tracks. The creature moved onto the tracks and she saw to her horror that it was a gigantic man covered with hair, not fur. The creature was about 7 ½ feet tall with a small head and very short, thick neck. Mrs. Chapman and the children fled in fear. When George Chapman arrived home, he immediately saw the woodshed door battered in, and saw enormous tracks humanoid footprints all over the place. The foot-tracks returned every night for a week. While the Sasquatch did not hurt them or touch the house, the whole business was too unnerving, and the family moved out and never went back.
